EA shut down the official NFS Most Wanted servers back in 2011, so the Online option in the game menu doesn't work anymore. But the game is far from dead! Thousands of players still race in Rockport every day thanks to Most Wanted Online (MWO), a fan project that brings NFS Most Wanted 2005 back online.
How did people play NFS MW online before?
For years, if you wanted to race your friends in NFS Most Wanted, you had to use programs like GameRanger, Hamachi or Tunngle. They made the game think you and your friends were on the same local network, so you could play the game's LAN mode over the internet.
Honestly, it was a pain. Everybody needed the same version of the game, somebody had to host, and often someone just couldn't connect. And even when it worked, all you got was a few races in a lobby, with no free roam and no cops. Tunngle shut down completely in 2018.
How to play NFS Most Wanted online in 2026
Today it's way easier. MWO runs the full NFS Most Wanted right in your browser, so there is nothing to download and nothing to install. Here's how to start playing:

And you're in Rockport! The first launch can take a bit longer because the game has to load, but after that it starts much faster.
